Do you need a personal branding agency?

A personal branding agency runs the machine around a founder's name: positioning strategy, ghostwritten posts, design, engagement, reporting and, at the top tiers, PR and video. Across three public guides read on 22 September 2026, retainers run from $500 a month for a freelancer-grade package to $25,000 and more for a full multi-channel team, and most founders land between $2,000 and $5,000. Sonar is the software half of that machine: it reads your week and drafts LinkedIn and X posts in a voice measured from your own posts, for $99 a month, and it sits under an agency as easily as it stands alone.

What a personal branding agency delivers

The word covers a wide market, from one ghostwriter with a Notion board to a twelve-person team with a PR desk. The guides below describe the same four kinds of work at every tier, with the depth rising with the price.

  • Strategy. Positioning and messaging, set at the start and revisited quarterly at the serious end; a named strategist; fortnightly or weekly calls in the mid and premium tiers.
  • Ghostwriting. The posts themselves: 4 to 8 a month at entry, 8 to 12 in the middle, 12 to 20 at the top, with one or two long-form essays a month appearing in the mid-market tiers.
  • Design and production. Carousels and quote cards, then custom photography and one or two short videos a month at premium, then video production days and cross-format repurposing at full service.
  • PR and distribution. Posting handled and monthly reporting from the middle up; light PR and podcast booking in the mid-market tiers; tier-one press, keynote representation and brand-deal sourcing at the top.

What a retainer usually leaves out, in the guides' own lists: paid media spend, PR placements below the top tier, website builds, and video days beyond the agreed number. Ask before you sign.

What a personal branding agency costs in 2026

Three public guides, each read on 22 September 2026. Each publisher sells in this market, so the tiers are how sellers describe themselves; the ranges overlap enough to trust. Clash prices the US market specifically, which is why its floor is higher.

Personal branding services, bought one at a time

The same market sells its parts separately, which is what "personal branding services" usually means in a search. From the guides above: a strategy session or a strategy phase from $995 at the entry point to $15,000 for a full one; a LinkedIn profile rebrand at $1,500 to $3,500; a ghostwritten long-form essay at $1,500 to $4,000; a single ghostwritten executive post at $250 to $750. Buying the parts is the sensible way to test an agency before a retainer.

The retainer in a founder's terms

A boutique retainer at $4,000 a month is $48,000 a year, and on a 9 to 12 month term that is the sum you are signing for. The mid-market tier that adds X and an essay a month runs $96,000 to $180,000 a year in the US guide. Those are hires. Treat the decision like one.

When an agency is the right call

Five cases where the retainer is the right money and software alone is the wrong answer.

  • You want placement. Bylines in named publications, podcast bookings, a keynote slot. Somebody has to pitch an editor and a producer, and software cannot. This is the clearest thing an agency sells that Sonar does not.
  • You want video and design at volume. A crew, a photographer, an editor, a carousel designer every week. Sonar's Studio records a talking-head take and makes a quote card or a carousel from a post; a production team is a different order of output.
  • You want channels beyond LinkedIn and X. A newsletter, a podcast, YouTube. Sonar publishes to LinkedIn and X. An agency runs the rest.
  • You will give it no time at all. Sonar publishes only what you approve, so a founder who will not read drafts gets no posts. An agency with posting authority keeps the feed alive without you. Choose that knowing whose words go out.
  • You want a quarterly partner on positioning. A senior strategist who revisits the plan every quarter against the numbers. Sonar shows you the numbers and the weekly brief; the conversation about them is a person's job.

Earned, not bought

Sonar's landing page carries three words under its headline: a personal brand is an asset, it compounds every week, and it is earned rather than bought. The third one is the argument that matters when you are pricing an agency, so here it is in plain terms.

An agency can amplify a position. Reach, polish, placements, a feed that never goes quiet: all real, all worth paying for when you have the position to amplify. What it cannot manufacture is the position itself. The takes you actually hold, the work you actually did, the thing that happened in your Tuesday meeting: those are yours or they are nobody's. A feed of polished posts about views you do not hold reads as bought, and readers who know the field can tell inside a month.

Here is the test. When the retainer ends, what stays? If the answer is a body of posts you could defend in a room, a voice people recognise as yours, and a habit of turning your own week into public thinking, the agency earned its fee. If the answer is a quiet feed and a folder of templates, you rented a presence for a year.

Sonar is built for the first answer. It writes from what you did, in a voice measured from what you already wrote, and it puts you in the approval seat for every post. That is the part of the machine that has to be yours whoever else is in the room. The LinkedIn personal branding guide sets out the four decisions underneath it.

How Sonar and an agency combine

The clean split: Sonar runs the week, the agency runs the rest. Connected read-only to Google Calendar, Google Meet, Slack, Granola, Fireflies, Wispr Flow, Notion and Zoom, Sonar reads the last seven days, keeps the moments and drafts LinkedIn and X posts in the founder's measured voice, with private people written as roles. The founder approves. The agency takes strategy, design, video, PR and the channels Sonar does not publish to, and can work inside the founder's Sonar workspace, where the drafts, the board and the numbers already live.

For an agency running several founders: each founder is their own workspace, with their own Intelligence Pack, voice, sources and board. There is no client switcher today; you run each founder inside that founder's workspace, and pricing for several workspaces is a conversation. The pricing page says the same.

The verdict

Two lists. Whichever describes you is the answer, and a founder can be on both.

Pick

A personal branding agency

  • You want press, podcasts and keynote placement, and someone to pitch for them.
  • You want video and design produced every week by a team.
  • You want a newsletter, a podcast or YouTube run alongside LinkedIn and X.
  • You will give the feed no time at all and accept that the words go out unread.
  • $3,000 to $15,000 a month is a line you are ready to hold for a year.

Pick

Sonar

  • The material is in your meetings and the missing piece is getting it onto the page in your own voice.
  • You will read the drafts each week and approve the ones that are true.
  • You want the position to be yours when any retainer ends: your posts, your voice, your habit.
  • LinkedIn and X are the channels that matter this year.
  • $99 a month is the budget, or the agency budget is better spent on the parts only people can do.
